Edgerton Veterinary Clinic
Keeping your pet healthy and happy.

SURGERY

Surgical procedures are performed Monday through Friday at Edgerton Veterinary Clinic.  The procedures offered include elective surgeries (spay, neuter, declaw) and non-elective procedures such as intestinal surgery, mass removals, and orthopedic procedures.  We are also able to offer special procedures performed in our hospital by the sugeons at Orchard Road Veterinary Surgery

Our doctors are all experienced in surgery and our operating room is well equipped with the instruments and monitors needed for your pet’s safety.  We know that complications can occur even in a routine procedure, so we have designed protocols to prevent most complications before they occur.

Preoperative Examination – Each pet is examined prior to anesthesia and surgery to determine health status.  If problems are detected in your pet, we will call you to discuss them and suggest possible changes to the anesthetic protocol.

Preoperative Laboratory Testing – The doctors and staff at Edgerton Veterinary Clinic will recommend a preoperative laboratory workup for your pet prior to anesthesia.  We offer several test combinations depending on the age of your pet.  While preoperative laboratory testing is an optional service, we recommend it because we believe testing helps to significantly reduce the incidence of complications.  If a problem can be detected, it can be dealt with before a complication arises in surgery.

Anesthetic Choices – Our clinic inventories a large number of anesthetic medications.  This allows the doctors to select an anesthetic protocol that is best suited to your pet’s needs rather than using a “one size fits all” approach.  Many of these medications require special record keeping for our staff, but we feel this effort is well worth the trouble to provide the safest conditions during your pet’s procedure.

Fluid Therapy - Surgical patients at Edgerton Veterinary Clinic are maintained on intravenous fluids during their procedures.  Fluid therapy allows for a greater degree of blood pressure control and provides ready access to the venous system if emergency drugs are required.

Monitoring – All anesthetic patients are monitored with special instruments to detect blood oxygen levels and heart rhythm during a procedure.  Edgerton Veterinary Clinic feels that these instruments, no matter how advanced, will never completely replace an experienced anesthesia technician.  For that reason, all anesthesia and surgery cases are also monitored manually during their procedure.

Recovery Monitoring – Monitoring during the recovery phase of the procedure is no less important for the patient.  We use special cage warming blankets to reduce heat loss during this period.  Our entire technician staff is available to assess recovering patients for any problems.  During this time we will also assess pain responses and administer additional medication for patients who experience discomfort.

Home Care Instructions – Surgical patients at Edgerton Veterinary Clinic are discharged with a written set of instructions.  These instructions address concerns about medication, exercise restriction and complications that would indicate a follow up visit.  We will also answer any specific questions you have when you pick up your pet from the clinic, but will be happy to discuss your pet at any time during their recovery at home.

Pain Medication – With such a large number of pain control options available, we do not believe that any pet should suffer through surgical pain unnecessarily.  A comfortable patient will heals faster and more completely.   Pain control medications are administered to all patients prior to a procedure and again later on the day of surgery.  Elective surgery fees (spay. neuter, declaw) include additional pain medication to be administered at home.  For almost all other surgeries, pain control medicine is an optional service that is highly recommended for your pet at home.
