We want you to know that Edgerton Veterinary Clinic takes the safety of your pet very seriously. Our packaged fee procedures (both elective and non-elective) include the use of specialized monitoring equipment and a variety of tests and post-operative care strategies to make the patient's surgical experience as smooth as possible. Prior to anesthesia we perform physical assessment and laboratory evaluation of your pet's health status before selecting a balanced anesthesia protocol that is specifically tailored to the patient and for the procedure that is planned.
Anesthesia is adminstered by certified and licensed Veterinary Technicians under the supervision of our Veterinarians. During the procedure, intravenous fluid therapy is provided to improve blood pressure (feline neuters or declaw procedures do not routinely receive fluid therapy). Thermal support is provided using warm air circulating blankets and a controled warming of intravenous fluids. Veterinary Technicians monitor all anesthetized patients continuously. Though we feel that no machine can replace the clinical judgement of an experienced Veterinary Technician, most pets will also be monitored by digital electronic methods. These electronic monitors provide a constant readout of important parameters throughout your pet's procedure to augment the skill of our experienced team members.
Recovery from anesthesia is monitored closely and thermal support is continued as needed in the postoperative period. We are never more than a few meters away from your pet as they recover from the procedure. Pain medication is administered prior to the procedure and in the post-operative period.
In spite of the intensive preparation and planning we put into every case, complications can arise. Reactions to anesthesia can be serious or fatal, bleeding can occur anytime an incision is made and infection may occur postoperatively. These complications are very unusual and Edgerton Veterinary Clinic protocols are designed to avoid them. But if complications occur, we will do everything possible to treat your pet. The additional costs of this treatment, if any, will be added to to fee for the procedure you have chosen.
