How VetCentric Is Different Than Other Online Pharmacies
Our past experience with online pharmacies has often been disappointing. Many do not honor the relationship that is built between a veterinarian and his or her client. At times, even though it is not legally acceptable, these pharmacies have filled prescriptions without direct approval from our veterinary staff. When this happens the result can be quite serious for a patient. Even in the best case, when we are not fully informed about all medications a patient is taking, care is compromised.
We have also noted that many online companies are oriented toward the human pharmaceutical market and lack expertise in veterinary medicines. They often choose to sell only high profit “Super Products” like heartworm and flea preventives. But they do not provide any other meaningful service to the client.
Because of these unethical business practices, some of the largest online veterinary pharmacies are under investigation or are currently defending lawsuits in several states.
The companies say that legal actions against them are merely the result of veterinarians grinding a financial axe. But even investors have become nervous after finding that management failed to disclose key points of their operating plan. Specifically, investors have charged that they did not know about the importance of veterinarian cooperation to the growth of these pharmacies.
The truth in any argument is often between the positions of the respective sides. To us, this case is no exception. While veterinarians have suffered financially due to online pharmacies, they most resent a breakdown of the relationship they have spent years to build, and the increased potential for medication related confusion.
